How to Get Packed Ice Bricks in Minecraft
Craft four packed ice blocks into a 2×2 square on a crafting table and you get one packed ice bricks block. The bricks themselves never require Silk Touch and always drop when mined — the Silk Touch pickaxe is only for collecting the packed ice ingredients. Packed ice bricks are currently experimental, available in Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21+ and Java 26.4 Snapshot 5+, and release for everyone in Q4 2026.
What you need first
- A crafting table (the 2×2 recipe fits the inventory grid too)
- 4 packed ice blocks per bricks block — see below for every way to get packed ice
- A pickaxe — fastest for mining the bricks back, but not required for the drop
- Access to the drop's test builds: Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21+ or Java snapshot 26.4-5+, until the Q4 2026 release
Step 1: Get packed ice
Packed ice is the only ingredient, and it's the hard part: without Silk Touch, mining packed ice drops nothing. Four reliable routes:
| Method | Details |
|---|---|
| Silk Touch mining | Mine packed ice with a Silk Touch pickaxe in the ice spikes biome, on frozen peaks, or in frozen-ocean icebergs. Without Silk Touch it drops nothing — but unlike regular ice it never leaves water behind. |
| Ice caves (new) | Fourth Drop 2026 adds packed ice generation throughout the new ice caves biome, including giant packed-ice speleothem columns. Same rule: Silk Touch required. |
| Wandering trader | Occasionally sells one packed ice for a single emerald — the cheapest option if you only need a few blocks and a trader shows up. |
| Craft from ice | 9 ice → 1 packed ice. Ice also needs Silk Touch to drop, so this only helps if your ice supply is easier to reach than packed ice. Note it's one-way: packed ice cannot be unpacked. |
Step 2: Craft the bricks
Place your four packed ice in a 2×2 square — that's it. The recipe is listed verbatim in both the Java 26.4 Snapshot 5 and Bedrock Preview 26.70.21 changelogs ("crafted using a 2×2 square of packed ice"), so it works identically in both editions.
Step 3: Variants — slab, stairs, wall and chiseled
The bricks aren't a single block but a full building set:
- Packed Ice Brick Slab / Stairs / Wall — standard building variants
- Chiseled Packed Ice — unlike most chiseled blocks it has no face; the pattern is an arrow
- All four variants craft at the crafting table or a stonecutter — stonecutter is the efficient route when converting a stack of bricks
What packed ice bricks do (and don't do)
| Property | Packed ice | Packed ice bricks |
|---|---|---|
| Slippery | Yes (0.98) | No — default friction |
| Needs Silk Touch to mine | Yes | No, always drops |
| Melts near light | No | No |
| Leaves water when broken | No | No |
| Fastest tool | Pickaxe | Pickaxe (hand works, slower) |
| Use | Ice roads, boat highways (40 m/s) | Building & decoration |
In short: packed ice is for going fast, bricks are for building pretty. If you're comparing all six ice blocks, we keep the full table in All Ice Blocks in Minecraft Compared.
Java vs Bedrock availability
The set landed in both editions on the same day, October 20, 2026:
- Bedrock — Preview 26.70.21 (Windows, iOS, iPadOS, Xbox, PlayStation) and Beta 26.70.21 (Android, ChromeOS). Join the Preview/Beta program from your platform's store or the Minecraft settings, then install the build.
- Java — 26.4 Snapshot 5. In the Minecraft Launcher, enable snapshots under installations, then create an installation for the 26.4 snapshot.
Until the Fourth Drop 2026 releases (Q4 2026, exact date unannounced), treat all of this as experimental: recipes and behavior can still change, and worlds opened in test builds should be backed up.
FAQ
What is the crafting recipe for packed ice bricks?
Four packed ice in a 2×2 square on a crafting table → one packed ice bricks block. Slab, stairs, wall and chiseled variants craft at the table or a stonecutter.

No — they always drop themselves, pickaxe or even bare hands. Silk Touch is only needed for the packed ice ingredient.
Are they in Bedrock and Java?
Yes: Bedrock Preview/Beta 26.70.21 and Java 26.4 Snapshot 5, both released October 20, 2026. Identical recipe in both editions.
Do packed ice bricks melt?
Never. They also never leave water behind when broken.
Where do I find packed ice?
Ice spikes biome, frozen peaks, frozen-ocean icebergs (Silk Touch), the new ice caves biome in this drop, or one-for-one-emerald from wandering traders.
